WATCH OUT FOR THE JURY DUTY SCAM
Your phone rings, you answer, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court.
You are told that a warrant has been issued for your arrest for failure to respond to a jury duty summons.
You tell the "jury duty coordinator" that you never received the notice.
The so-called court official asks you for your Social Security Number and date of birth, your address, and the proper spelling of your name, so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant.
The jury duty scam is a simple variation of the identity-theft ploys used in recent years to steal personal information. This scam is particularly effective because the victim is caught off guard, and put into fear of being arrested by the authorities.
With this scam and others, protecting yourself is key:
NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION WHEN YOU RECEIVE AN UNSOLICITED PHONE CALL.
Ask for the name of the person calling, and then hang up!!!!
Call information or look up the court jury coordinator phone number on the internet. Call the court and check the so-called jury duty summons status.
Don't call the number given to you by the scam caller.
Be smart and protect yourself.
